Becoming Commercial Architecture Designer

What is a commercial architecture designer? In a few words, he is a professional working on the construction of buildings for commercial use (such as department stores for example). He can also bring his expertise for the renovation or the rearrangement of commercial spaces.

Designing spaces to optimise commercial activity (sales area, flow, reception) and to improve the users’ convenience, whether for small shops, restaurants or shopping centres, is the role of the commercial architecture designer.

 

THE ROLE OF THE COMMERCIAL ARCHITECTURE DESIGNER

The commercial architecture designer is involved in the design of the space, its layout or its rehabilitation.
It is up to him to answer the needs expressed by his client, and to help him to adapt the specifications according to the projects’ requirements.
He must bring coherence and relevance in the field of commercial architecture.
The commercial architectural designer is a professional of spatial organization.
He can intervene ahead of a commercial project, or provide his expertise during the process of creation, in order to solve a specific problem. He must never lose sight of the primary vocation of those commercial structures, which is to sale products and services, while taking into account the flow of clients and the potential safety issues.

SKILLS AND QUALITIES

The commercial architecture designer masters space design techniques, is able to analyse the clients’ needs, to establish a picture of the situation, and to define a working methodology. He masters drawing, perspective, atmospheric rendering (colours, lighting, materials), is capable of analysing and understanding a customer request (whether he is a private individual or a professional), and he also masters the computer tools : computer graphics and 3D, preview and architectural modeling… The commercial architecture designer must adapt to many parameters.

The BTS in Space Design offered at ESMA is a two-year course during which the student will learn the design and layout of living spaces, whether interior or exterior, private or public.

Upon examination of the file, and after interview, tests, the training is accessible at the end of a MANAA or a Prepa Design or a BAC in applied arts (STD2A)

The training is accessible after a MANAA, a Design Preparatory Class, or a high-school diploma in applied arts (Bac STD2A). Students willing to join it will be submitted to an interview, tests, and their school record will be examined.

The space design course enables graduates to work in architectural firms, specialised agencies, creative offices, as employees or freelancers. The pursue of studies after the BTS in Space Design offered at ESMA, in a school of architecture or in an interior design school for example, is also a possibility.
