Last month, students in the 1st year of Illustration Concept Art at ESMA Montpellier had the chance to take part in a workshop led by artist Yohan Colombié-Vivès. This illustrator and comic strip artist, who has himself studied at the school, worked with them on an illustration project on the theme of fictional characters.

3 days of high intensity

For 3 days, the students had to slip into the shoes of illustrators responding to requests from a publisher looking for a new artist. Their mission : to design a test illustration for the cover of a fiction book, in their own style and artistic universe, with a theme – developed by Yohan Colombié-Vivès – to be chosen from the following introductions :

  • in an old Egyptian style, where sand, the debris of statues and sarcophagi play an important role, imagine a story about a bear accompanied by a small magic bird
  • in a traditional Indian style, featuring a palace, lush vegetation and Indian deities, create a story about a typical Indian teenager and her mount, a Bengal tiger
  • imagining the adventure of a mother and her 10-year-old son, accompanied by their dog, in a post-apocalyptic city, with glimpses of forst, concrete and a huge, levitating black diamond.

Throughout the workshop, during which the students showed great commitment, they were able to carry out research to define their narrative, artistic and technical choices more precisely, and to immerse themselves in the chosen universe. They then gave life to their first sketches, researching colours and thinking about the composition of their cover, all under the watchful eye of Yohan Colombié-Vivès. “It’s always a great time sharing with the students, he says enthusiastically. They are curious, dynamic and full of enthusiasm… Everything you need to get started!”

Maison Tremble, an ecological tale for the very young

The workshop was an opportunity for the Auscite artist to present his new project, Maison Tremble, a children’s book scheduled for release on 7 April. This 34 page ecological fable, in tune with the times and the issues of our time, was produced entirely “by hand, and more specifically in acrylic and coloured pencil”.

Written and illustrated for the children’s publisher Diplodocus, Maison Tremble follows the adventures of Maison and Oiseau, who join forces with the other inhabitants of the forest to try and save Montagne from the dangers of civilisation. It is an enlightening journey, treated with tenderness and kindness, to the delight of young readers.
